5 Simple things businesses can do to improve health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Unfortunately, work-related stress will likely never disappear.

However, that doesn’t mean businesses shouldn’t try to make the workplace as stress-free as possible and promote wellness within the company.

It is essential for employees to feel supported, safe, energised, and healthy.

Here are 5 simple things businesses can do to promote health and wellbeing in the workplace.

Promote a Healthy Diet

Diet has a huge impact on mental health, and the food we eat can influence our mood, motivation and productivity in work.

It is important to feed our brains the right nutrients and give our bodies sufficient energy for the day.

Businesses don’t need be pushy in promoting a healthy diet, and this step isn’t us saying only serve chicken and rice every day.

Simply provide healthy options where possible and promote the idea that healthy eating is good for the brain and body.

Encourage Exercise

We all know the benefits of exercise on the body, but physical exercise also has been proven to be extremely beneficial to our mental health.

From combating anxiety, stress, and depression, to boosting mental energy and productivity levels; exercise can have a profound impact on the health and wellness of the workplace.

Again, the key is to not be too pushy and demand all employees head straight to the gym.

For businesses, encouraging exercise could include daily step-count goals, virtual walking challenges or exercise during workhours.

Praise and Recognition

For some, the workplace may affect their health and wellness in that they don’t feel recognised or appreciated for the work they do.

Business can promote a workplace that recognises and praises achievements and hard work:

If someone has done a particularly good job one day, let them know.

If someone else has met a specific goal, congratulate them.

Or, if someone has reached their step-count goal for the day, praise them.

Work-life Balance

Perhaps now, more than ever, people are starting to see the importance of a work-life balance, and the affect this balance can have on one’s health and wellness.

Some prefer working from home, whilst some like working in an office environment. Each person is unique, and copes with work-related stress in different ways.

Of course, it is ultimately down to the business on where people work and what hours they do. But concepts such as flex-work time and no emails past work hours could go a long way in improving employees work-life balance, and boosting their health and wellbeing.

Education

To promote wellness in the workplace, business and employees could see to educate themselves on health and wellbeing.

Mental health is varied subject; but businesses and employees could learn about the prevention of serious complications, ways to help, how to communicate, the scale of alcohol abuse in the UK, or best business practices in terms of health and wellbeing.

Overall, it is important to encourage a workplace where talking about mental health issues and illness isn’t a taboo subject.

Ultimately, encouraging health and wellbeing in the workplace can vary from simple changes and small investments to staff training and wellness programmes.

The main idea is to foster a supportive environment that advocates for communication, confidence and health. It is about enhancing social interactions, building personal skills, and valuing employees.

Why should businesses promote health and wellness?

Apart from the obvious benefits, there are many reasons why organisations should promote health and wellness.

Business advantages that come from promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace, include:

Increased productivity.

Enhanced staff decision-making capabilities.

Reduced risk of long-term health problems.

Fewer sick leave and absenteeism.

Reduced employee turnover.

Firstly, it is important to establish an agreed commitment.

Additionally, businesses should also seek to get everyone involved.

Allow employee voices to be heard. Do they have concerns? Can they identify areas that need improvement? Do they feel comfortable with the current work-life balance? Do workers feel like they can talk about their health problems to the management team?

Next, formulate a plan.

Take employee feedback onboard and identify key areas for improvement. Then, formulate a plan that addresses existing issues or problems.

For example, if employees identify that there are no healthy options in the cafeteria, then perhaps the plan can focus on this.

If employees report high levels of stress, then this area needs to be addressed.

If workers feel like they cannot talk about their mental health problems to the management team, then perhaps communication within the workplace needs to improve.

When creating your plan to promote health and wellbeing in the workplace, be sure to keep things relevant to your workers’ specific needs.

Take action.

Make changes that benefit your employees.

Give them the correct training and education to ensure success.

But remember, some changes will take time to take effect, and workplace culture cannot change overnight.

Overall, if businesses commit to making positive changes, and carefully plan their actions, then they should be able to successfully encourage health and wellbeing in the workplace.

2020 Pride of Britain Award for Rhian Mannings

Rhian Mannings who set up the charity 2 Wish Upon A Star will receive a Special Recognition Award with NHS front-line staff, footballer-turned-food campaigner Marcus Rashford, and charity fundraiser Captain Sir Tom Moore also being honoured.

In February 2012, Rhian was playing with her son George while her husband Paul was downstairs making a cup of tea.

George suffered a sudden seizure and despite efforts of staff at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, died shortly after arriving.

It was later discovered that the 12-month-old had been suffering from bronchial pneumonia and type A influenza.

Unable to cope with the sudden and devastating loss of his son and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Paul took his own life five days later at the age of 33.

Rhian, who admitted she could barely function for months, said the turning point came when she launched 2 Wish Upon A Star to support others suffering from the sudden loss of a child or young person, giving them the help she and Paul never had.

The charity is now working with almost every accident and emergency department in Wales and operates family rooms in hospitals to provide a private place of comfort and support after sudden bereavement.

It also works with police forces, offers counselling and support to people who have lost a young person suddenly, as well as those who have witnessed a sudden death.

Former teacher Rhian, from Miskin, Pontyclun, said the Pride of Britain awards hold a special place in her heart.

“I struggle to talk about it, which is very unlike me. It's only because I'm just so overwhelmed,” she said.

“Paul and I used to watch the awards on television together and we used to always think how amazing these people were.

“I just cannot believe I've been recognised, and it means their legacy is having a massive impact – and that's what it's always been about since 2012.”

Rhian, who was awarded an MBE in 2019, said that while very few children had died from Covid-19, the charity had seen a surge in young people taking their own lives since March.

“The mental health of our youngsters is massive and we have had a significant increase in young suicides,” she said.

“So our work has to continue to support these families. We have to be there and we're just reaching out for people to come forward and support our organisation.”

Dyslexia Awareness Week 5th -11th October 2020

What is Dyslexia?

Fundamentally, when commemorating Dyslexia Awareness Week it’s essential to discuss what dyslexia is.

Far from rare, dyslexia is a common difficulty people face when reading text or words. Because intelligence is not impacted, it is not described as a learning disability but a difficulty.

The main disruption dyslexia causes is phonological awareness. In other words, this is our ability to understand sounds and letters (phonemes).

The extent of a person’s dyslexia can greatly vary. For some people, their dyslexia may just slow them down when reading and writing. But for others, dyslexia can be as serious as causing visual interruptions when reading, with words and letters appearing blurred.

When affecting an estimated 10% of the UK population, it’s important to fully understand what dyslexia is. This is especially the case for Dyslexia Awareness Week in schools, whereby reading, writing and general learning are integral to everyday life.

What can be done to support people with dyslexia?

As well as showing awareness and a thorough understanding of what dyslexia is, it’s important to understand how to help those who struggle with it. This is not only the case for Dyslexia Awareness Week but should be day-to-day normality.

Of course, you should always be patient with those who struggle to read. Always encourage them. Whilst it may not appear so on the outside, they may find this a major challenge. Remember this and offer to help if you can.

As a parent, an enjoyable whilst helpful activity to do could be reading to your child. This way, you can inspire them to get interested in stories, imaginative language and vocabulary. By sharing ideas about books, you can discuss key ideas and help your child get a better grip on language.

If you’re commemorating Dyslexia Awareness Week, you could discuss these interesting facts with your class:

  • Britain’s favourite foodie, Jamie Oliver, is dyslexic. Rather than seeing this as a negative, Jamie is proud of his dyslexia. He believes this enables him to see the world from a different perspective. Dyslexia has not held him back, and you don’t have to look far to see the evidence. As of 2020, he has a net worth of an estimated £230 million.
  • 50% of people with dyslexia are left-handed, whereas only 11% of the total UK population are left-handed.
  • The Dyslexic brain is typically larger than the average-sized brain and often more creative.
  • The most common cause of dyslexia is genetics and the way the brain neurologically develops.
  • Dyslexia can also be acquired later in life, due to a brain injury from trauma or disease.

Adult Learners Week 21st – 27th September 2020

Adult Learners’ Week now in its 29th year is the biggest adult learning campaign in Wales with over 10,000 adults in Wales taking part. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the value of adult learning, celebrate the achievements of inspirational people and projects and motivate people to discover just how learning can positively change their lives. In response to current events, this year’s campaign will take place virtually through online platform – courses and taster sessions, see more information below. The campaign is coordinated by Learning and Work Institute Cymru in partnership with Welsh Government and other partners.
